J. Bengtsson takes her audience back to where it all started in her epic Cake series in What Lasts for a story rich in history and filled with the joys and sorrows of the human condition seen through the lens of the McKallister family matriarch and patriarch.
Throughout the Cake series Ms. Bengtsson included Scott and Michelle McKallister as essential secondary characters key to the development of the series but never the focus. Yet how each book in this series evolved drew from this pair and was the foundation of all the characters' weaknesses and strengths contributing core values and traits.
The exploring the multi facets of Scott McKallister was no small feat. Comedically tortured insight into Scott was at times hilarious and poignant but never boring. His devotion and love of Michelle stood the test of tragedy and time with a steadfast love that did not diminish when life presented hurdles. His ability to overcome his own lack of a father figure and be a loving and caring father was well done by the author. Whether hot mail or hot mess Scott was a memorable and beloved portrayal.
Heiress Michelle Carver came into her own in this work. Going from approval seeking family doormat to a strong woman capable of facing anything she came up against was inspiring to watch play out. Seeing Michelle go from being the product of two distant and judging parents to a loving and nurturing one was a testament of her capacity to love unconditionally. Michele's ability to see beyond the obvious allowed her to live the life she wanted versus what was expected of her.
In many ways Scott and Michelle were diametrically opposed to each other but more so they completed each other. Looking past the surface and accepting each other for who they were rather than how they could be changed was essential to this relationship. Vivid histories and kindness took Scott and Michelle from superficial to dimensional creating interesting and fallible portrayals that readers could relate to and embrace. This couple's love was so much more than passion, it was true and full of depth.
With robust wit and glaring truths J. Bengtsson has a unique and captivating writing style that has built a devoted fan base. This author's attention to details and her ability to convey the essence of who her characters are is truly a gift. What Last is the start and culmination of a series which will no doubt withstand the test of time and merit rereads long past readers first encounter with the McKallister family. Thank you Jill Bengtsson for a body of work that resides not only on bookshelves but in the hearts of readers.
